Case Review Request
The Professional Midwives of Mississippi (Pro Mom) is committed to providing excellence in client care based on the Midwifery Model of Care. Pro Mom recognizes that birth outcomes are greatly enhanced when providers and consumers find positive ways to work together toward common goals. To this end, Pro Mom has set review procedures that allow members to evaluate unexpected maternal and neonatal outcomes in antenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care. These review and complaint procedures allow individual midwives to learn from one another, identify gaps in training and clinical judgment, collaborate to improve results, and give healthcare providers and consumers an avenue to raise concerns.
Pro Mom is available to address complaints and concerns from other midwives, healthcare providers, and consumers concerning unexpected outcomes involving Pro Mom midwives. Also, as part of our commitment to fostering communication among all childbirth providers, Pro Mom is willing to try to help resolve complaints and concerns about non-Pro Mom midwives. In all cases, Pro Mom will do its best to resolve problems and complaints through our routine review procedures. However, Pro Mom will conduct formal Case Reviews of individual Pro Mom midwives in cases with concerns about case management or outcomes. Pro Mom is also willing to offer formal Peer Review evaluation to non-Pro Mom midwives who request or consent to it.
Midwives, consumers, and healthcare providers may make known complaints or concerns by completing the FORM below or by emailing details of the situation to promom@mississippimidwives.org. Based on the details of the complaint, the Executive Board will determine how to handle each complaint as follows;
1. Informal Discussion: Pro Mom is willing to make opportunities for communication and discussion available to individuals who have concerns about individual midwives. Concerned Individuals may be invited to a Pro Mom business meeting, chapter meeting, or case review session to allow communication.
2. Facilitation/Mediation: In some cases, Pro Mom may be able to facilitate discussions or help arrange mediation.
3. Peer Review: Pro Mom will host an informal chart review session, during which midwives give and receive feedback about general and specific management issues. Peer review sessions occur four times yearly at Pro Mom quarterly meetings and may also take place at regional chapter meetings.
4. Case Review: In all cases where a complaint has been registered, Pro MOM will facilitate a formal process by which the midwife's peers evaluate the complaint and make recommendations.
Notice to Complainant

Consumers should be aware that Mississippi does not license community-based midwifery care. Pro Mom is a 501(c)6 organization and its membership is voluntary. Pro Mom nor any other organization has legal jurisdiction over individual midwives. Rather, we seek to hold our body of midwives accountable to each other and to the community by providing educational opportunities, review procedures and by bringing awareness to the significance of the adherence to Standards of Care and Practice Protocols.

Consumers and other health professionals should make all formal requests for Case Review within six (6) months of the situation. The Executive Board will consider exceptions if the circumstances warrant such consideration. Complainants may be invited or requested to attend case reviews if appropriate. Complainants may also be asked to provide specific information in writing or via voice recording for the review. If the complainants are absent from the session, the Executive Board will contact them to summarize the issues discussed after the session. For a complaint to Pro Mom about a non-Pro Mom midwife, Pro Mom will attempt to contact the midwife, make her aware of the complaint, and invite her to a case review. The Executive Board will contact complainants to inform them of the outcome of their case.
